Cadillac Arts Centre opens its building and courtyard for an afternoon and evening of work and making. Open studios, a reading, music, and food. Registration required; free.

Spend an afternoon and evening inside one of Detroit’s most active creative buildings. Cadillac Arts Centre opens its studios and its OSD-designed courtyard to the public, with something to see and do in every direction.

Walk the building and meet the makers. In Thicket Books hosts a reading by designer Scott Klinker, who led Cranbrook’s 3D Design program for 24 years, on his new book Fine Design. Bowerbird Home features planters by Gray Gardens Plant Studio. Take Me Home presents eye to eye, new work by Jim Schatz and Peter Souza Jr. built from more than 2,600 glazed ceramic tiles, reading as a pair of eyes across the room and breaking into tile, glaze, and grid up close, shown with wood sculpture, painted plates, and video, finished by hand in Detroit.

Black Art Library and artist studios throughout the building are open and at work. In the courtyard, music plays and food is on hand from local vendors, and next door, the Amend community garden led by Allana Clarke is a place to sit, talk, and stay a while. It’s a chance to see how many disciplines share one block – literary arts, visual art, publishing, object design, community work – and how design shows up as daily life on Detroit’s east side.

Open to all; registration is required and attendance is free.
