About Amend Community Garden

The Amend Community Garden is located at the corner of St. Paul & Pennsylvania, directly behind the Cadillac Arts Centre. The garden focuses on cultivating climate resilient heirloom plants to reflect on the complex and brutal histories of migration and displacement, with a particular focus on Africa, the Caribbean, and the American South. By positioning culturally significant plants as living archives and witnesses to histories of displacement and communal resilience, this work mediates on the act of seed saving. In times of diasporic upheaval, saving a seed, carrying it across continents, not knowing if your hands will be the ones to steward it, is an act of faith. It creates the possibility of a future and insists upon your humanity, and the humanity of others. The edible plants that will be grown in the garden not only contain the essence of this profound act, they contain the genetic information of thousands of years of cultivation, are vital for preserving diverse foodways, and essential in supporting seed sovereignty movements.
