Robert Sestok: City Sculpture

Robert Sestok: City Sculpture is a site-specific installation of 16 large-scale sculptures spanning several decades of work by the Detroit-based artist, nestled within the grounds of River Trail.

For more than five decades, Sestok has taken a deconstructive approach across painting, multimedia and welded steel. He works largely in scrap, salvage and recycled material drawn from the yards, foundries and streets of Detroit. He came up as part of the Cass Corridor movement, a generation of artists working in that neighborhood in the 1960s and 70s. His command of these sculptures is the product of a lifetime at the torch, in abstract forms that hold their scale without losing their precision. He allows some of the steel to oxidize, so the work continues to change with the seasons.

City Sculpture is a nonprofit organization founded on a conviction that ambitious art belongs within a neighborhood, encountered freely and without ceremony.
